Braided-Base or Tape-In Extensions: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing a method is the single most important decision when getting hair extensions. It affects comfort, how the extensions blend, how long they last, and how much maintenance they need. The two approaches we're asked about most are the braided base (weft) technique and tape-ins.

Braided-base (weft) extensions

With a braided-base install, your natural hair is woven into small, flat cornrows, and wefts of hair are sewn onto that base. No glue, heat, or adhesive touches your own hair.

Best for: thick or coarse hair, anyone wanting maximum volume, and clients who prefer a completely glue-free method.

  • Very secure — holds up to active lifestyles and workouts
  • No adhesive or heat on your natural hair
  • Handles a lot of added volume and length
  • Re-tightened every 6–8 weeks as your hair grows

Tape-in extensions

Tape-ins are thin wefts attached with a medical-grade adhesive strip, sandwiched around small sections of your own hair. They lie flat and are quick to apply.

Best for: fine to medium hair, subtle volume, and clients who want the fastest application.

  • Lightweight and nearly invisible against the scalp
  • Fast to apply and remove
  • Reusable if maintained well
  • Repositioned every 6–8 weeks as they grow out

How to decide

If you have fine hair and want a barely-there feel, tape-ins are usually the better fit. If you want serious volume, a glue-free method, or you're very active, the braided base is hard to beat. During a consultation we assess your hair density, scalp, and lifestyle before recommending one.

Not sure which suits you? Book a consultation and we'll match the method to your hair — not the other way around.
